Day 1 (10/9): Word of the Day: Usury – the start of banking, giving loans and charging high interest
Warm-up: Review Renaissance with students. Go over maps, review games, discussion with questions, study guide, etc.
Activities: Renaissance quiz – 30 question quiz on both the Northern and Italian Renaissance.
Corruption in the Church reading and Questions – students will read the short article on corruption in the church before Martin Luther, and will answer questions about the reading. If time – students and the teacher can discuss the reading as well – be sure to go over the idea of Simony with the students.
Activities: Reformation lecture – Teachers will teach about the Reformation using a visual powerpoint while students take notes.
Martin Luther Play – students will read the play about Martin Luther and answer depth and complexity questions as they read.
Closer: Indulgences can still be given out today, but they are much more limited. Do you think indulgences should still be given out? Why or why not?
Day 3 (10/15): Note: PSAT day Word of the Day: Pre-Destination - the divine foreordaining of all that will happen, especially with regard to the salvation of some and not others.
Warm-up: Draw a visual that represents how Calvin believed one could achieve salvation.
Students will fill in a depth and complexity chart reacting to the conditions
Closer: Would you like to have lived in Medieval London? Why or why not?
Day 4 (10/17): Word of the Day: Edict of Nantes - the law granting religious and civil liberties to the French Protestants (Huguenots), promulgated by Henry IV in 1598 and revoked by Louis XIV in 1685
Warm-up: Discuss what was done last class – what was the motivation of the creation of the church?
Counter Reformation Activity on the Society of Jesus, Council of Trent, and Inquisition – Students will read and answer the questions in the DBQ style activity.

Closer: After Martin, Calvin, and Henry, do you think the Catholic Church reacted in a good way, or a bad way to the Protestant Reformation? What do you think they should have done to stop the Reformation?
Day 5 (10/21): Warm-up: Discuss what was done last class – what was the motivation of the Counter Reformation?

Activities: Teachers will review the Reformation by doing quick notes from a PowerPoint.
Counter Reformation Activity on the Society of Jesus, Council of Trent, and Inquisition – Students will read and answer the questions in the DBQ style activity will be finished.
Teachers can choose to have the students finish the Saints and Sinners poster – students divide a piece of paper in half and draw a picture of Martin Luther as a Saint and as a Sinner. Then students list 5 reasons why Martin was a saint and 5 reasons why he was a sinner.
Teachers can pass out the 30 Years War map, where students review the important aspects of the war by filling in a map about the event.
