AP World History Summer Assignment - highly recommended work
1. Please sign up for the Remind.com class I have created. This is for both parents and students. It is a program designed to allow you to text me directly to my phone, but not give out my phone number or yours. Please use this to contact me over the summer if you have questions about the class or the assignment.
How to join Remind: Text @4fbfk4 to 81010
Recommended summer reading: Want to get ahead? Read these two books below.
-Salt: a world history (Kurlansky) (@the Virginia Beach Public Library, 1 copy)
- A History of the World in 6 Glasses (Tom Standage) (a personal favorite - history through beverages: tea, beer, wine, spirits, coffee, Coca-Cola) (@the Virginia Beach Public Library, 4 copies)
FREE TIME? REALLY??
Still have some free time even with the large amount of work I've assigned? Below are (or will be appearing) a few fun things you can do that will help you get ready for AP World History. (FYI: These do not count as an essay book. Sorry, nice try though!)
Read the Graphic Novel (that's fancy talk for comic book) called Abina and the Important Men by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke
~Why I love this book: It gives a voice to a minority who currently has no voice, enslaved women. It also was done by a historian and used ACTUAL documents to tell the story (that means it's true folks). The historical notes are just as important as the story and it will be a super fast read. I read the whole thing in about 3 hours flat. The negative is that it is NOT available through the Virginia Beach Public Library at this time, though I have requested they get a couple copies.
Read the book: Fiddler on Pantico Run by Joe Mozingo.
~Why I love this book: A journalist traces the journey of his ancestor that led a white guy in California to learn his name is a slave name from Africa. Easy read, lots of history, really does a great job of laying out both American attitudes towards the slave trade, but it has great connections to Africa. Available at the Princess Anne branch of the Virginia Beach Public Library. Put a hold on it and get it delivered to your branch today!
Lost in Shangri-la: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of WWII by Mitchell Zuckoff
~ Why I love this book: A hidden valley full of stone age villagers is found during WWII in New Guinea. A sightseeing plane full of American military members include WACs, crash lands in the valley. It is a great example of how different cultures view each other and interact with each other. There are seven copies available through the Virginia Beach Public Library.
Sugar in the Blood: A Family's Story of Slavery and Empire by Andrea Stuart
~ Why i love this book: This book tells the family history of a mixed race woman from Barbados whose Great, great grandmother was a slave and her Great, great grandfather was the slave owner. She uses her family history to tell the bigger history of the Caribbean islands throughout colonial possession.Easy read, and really good! Available online through the Virginia Beach Public Library for your Kindle or other other device.
